This substance is derived from the family of glycol ethers. As such, it produces a semi-sweet odor and comes in the form of a colorless liquid. It has a relatively low toxicity and is lighter than water. It also evaporates rather quickly. 2-Butoxyethanol works exceedingly well as a surfactant, so its primary use is in the making of solvents and cleaning products. These mixtures can be found in a wide array of different industries, including asphalt release agents, lacquers, varnishes, herbicides, cosmetics, dry cleaning solutions, firefighting foam, degreasers, and liquid soaps, among others. 2-Butoxyethanol is mildly hazardous to humans, and it can cause irritation if inhaled, ingested, or exposed to the eyes and skin. Over exposure to concentrated amounts can be fatal, however, and it is also highly flammable. Because it evaporates quickly, it must not be stored in open containers or near any combustible materials.
