Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, also known as Octinoxate and Ethyl Hexyl Methoxycine, is a clear, insoluble liquid. Ethyl is used in a vast array of products that contain skin-protecting ingredients. These products are typically regulated as OTC or Over-the-Counter drugs. This chemical is used primarily in products that are designed to be applied to the skin to scatter, reflect or absorb UV rays. This protects the skin against sunburn and other harmful effects of the sun. In addition, the chemical safeguards personal care and cosmetic products against deterioration resulting from UV rays. When used as protection for the product, the ingredient is referred to as Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate. Extended exposure to UV light could negatively affect the immune system, the skin and the eyes. UV light also contributes to skin aging and damages the collagen found in the skin. Octinoxate can assist in protecting against sunburn and other damaging effects of UV light; this is done through the absorption of UV radiation.
