Hydrocarbons are commonly and naturally occurring organic compounds that consist entirely of the elements hydrogen and carbon. They consist of many different chemical subgroups such as aromatic hydrocarbons or arenes, alkanes, alkenes, and alkyne-based compounds. Most types of hydrocarbons are mostly found in crude oils naturally produced by the earth, therefore making them essential components in most biofuel or sustainable, eco-friendly energy source alternatives to the less sustainable and less eco-friendly and renewable energy source in gasoline. Hydrocarbons are essential to the study and research of organic chemistry and primarily serve as the primary energy source for today’s modern and advanced civilizations. Because of this function and significance, hydrocarbons commonly take the form of methane, ethane, hexane, asphalt, jet fuel, and of course common gasoline.
