This dilute form of hydrochloric acid has numerous commercial and industrial applications, particularly as an additive in toilet bowl cleaners, cleaning metal and other stains on concrete surfaces, removing rust from metal, and many more applications. Hydrochloric acid is easily diluted in concentration and potency by the addition of water, and specifically calibrated dilutions of hydrochloric acid make exceptional etchants when applied in commercial and industrial settings. In the medical field, dilute hydrochloric acid has recently been used to treat cases of severe metabolic alkalosis due to gastric hypersecretion (patients who suffer from overproduction of metabolic/digestive hydrochloric acid in the stomach and gastrointestinal system). The treatment involves a combination of histamine H2-receptor antagonists and dilute hydrochloric acid given by IV infusion. Combined with electrolyte replacement and gastric secretion suppression has showed promise in controlling this somewhat rare but very serious metabolic abnormality when more conventional treatments have proven to be ineffective.
