Manganese chloride is the description of a series of compounds with the formula MnCl2(H2O)x. The value of x can be 0, 2 or 4. Manganese chloride is used in the production of other manganese compounds and as a catalyst to chlorinate organic compounds. In the chemical industry it is an important raw material when producing magnesium hydroxide and other such magnesium compounds. In the construction industry it is used to make fireproof materials and lightweight building materials such as fiberglass tiles, floor bricks, magnesium cement and materials for building high rises. It is also used in snow melters. Various other industrial uses include as an ingredient in paint driers, dyeing, in disinfectants and in dry-cell batteries. It is also used in food production. It is used to make food proteins solid, as an ingredient in dietary supplements and as a general food additive. Additionally it is used in animal feed to provide vital trace minerals.
