This substance is clear and colorless and does not produce any odors. It can either be found as a thick, viscous liquid or as a crystalline solid. In both instances, phosphoric acid is both miscible in water and soluble in ethanol. It is mostly stable in the air, although it will absorb water vapor rapidly. Up to 90% of all phosphoric acid produced is utilized for fertilizers. Phosphorous helps initiate plant and root growth, which generates higher crop yields. In smaller quantities, this substance may be used for particular toothpaste, anti-nausea medications, or as a food additive. Since it is corrosive to some metals, it can even be a decent rust remover. Due to its corrosive nature, care and attention must be paid when handling phosphoric acid. Gloves and eye protection should be worn at all times. It is not flammable, but it should be kept in a cool, dry area. Flush any exposed tissues with water immediately to help minimize burns.
