Phosphoric acid is a clear, odorless and colorless liquid that is usually syrupy in consistency. Phosphoric acid is also known as orthophosphoric acid or E388 (food-grade phosphoric acid). It is usually prepared using three processes -- thermal, wet and dry kiln. It is commonly used in making colas, thus, giving it a tangy flavor. Aside from being a food additive, it is also use as a rust remover or rust converter. In dental medicine, it is used as an etching solution to prepare the tooth for filling or for placement of dental orthoses. It also helps eliminate plaque; therefore, most teeth whiteners contain the ingredient. It is also one of the ingredients of most OTC anti-nausea medications. There are many other uses of phosphoric acid. It is often used in the industrial and manufacturing industry. For instance, phosphoric acid is used in leather treatment, production of detergents, as chelant in household cleaners, and as an electrolyte in HHO generators and copper electro polishing.
