This substance can either be produced as a thick, white solid or as a colorless liquid. It is considered deliquescent, meaning that it will absorb water in the air quite rapidly. Another name for potassium hydroxide is caustic potash, thanks to its corrosive and toxic nature. It is soluble in glycerol and alcohol and will completely dissolve in water. One of the primary applications of this substance is in the production of soft and liquid soaps. Since it doesn’t require as much water as sodium hydroxide, it can be a much better for cleaning. Other uses for potassium hydroxide include the production of alkaline and nickel-cadmium batteries, as well as petroleum and natural gas refining. This substance is toxic to humans and must be handled with care and attention. Gloves, eye protection, and a breathing mask should be worn at all times to prevent burns and irritation. It is not flammable, but it should be kept sealed in a cool, dry area.
