This chemical is classified as an acid salt. It is a white, crystalline substance that is produced by mixing sodium hydroxide and sulfuric acid. The two byproducts of this mixture are sodium bisulfate and water. Other names for this chemical include sodium acid sulfate and monosodium salt. The primary use of this chemical is as a cleaning agent. It works well as a microbicide, herbicide, and a fungicide. As such, it is utilized to clean bathroom surfaces, including toilets and showers. Another application of this substance is to lower the pH balance of water, such as in swimming pools. Sodium bisulfate is highly toxic to humans and can corrode both skin and eye tissue. Gloves and goggles should be worn at all times, and a breathing mask can help prevent accidental inhalation or ingestion. If it does get into the lungs or throat, it can cause burning and blistering.
