Another name for this chemical is oil of vitriol. It is highly corrosive against many different substances, included metal, stone, and human tissue. Sulfuric acid is a thick, oily liquid that is both colorless and odorless. However, if it is heated, it may produce strong acrid vapors. It is also tasteless, but it is harmful if swallowed. Because of its corrosive nature, sulfuric acid is mainly used as an ingredient in fertilizers. About 60% of all acid produced worldwide is created for this purpose. Another primary application for sulfuric acid is the production of detergents, resins, and dyes. It can also be found in petroleum refining, iron and steel manufacturing, and even for making nylon. Gloves, goggles, and a breathing mask must be worn at all times when handling this substance. Direct exposure to the skin or eyes can result in chemical burns or blindness. Ingestion or inhalation can be fatal. It must be sealed and stored in a cool, dry area.
