A 4-liter glass bottle of reagent grade toluene intended for general use as a solvent or in the industrial manufacturing process of benzene. The main use of toluene is as a precursor to benzene in industrial production, but it is also a common solvent for paints, paint thinners, printing ink, leather tanners, adhesives, lacquers, disinfectants, rubber, and silicone sealant. It is also used in certain octane boosters for gasoline-powered internal combustion engines. It also has some niche uses such as applying it as a solvent for carbon nanomaterials such as nanotubes and fullerenes, and it also functions as a fullerene indicator. Toluene also makes an excellent cement for fine polystyrene modeling kits since it slightly dissolves fuses the points of contact, especially due to the fact that it is very easy to apply precisely using a brush. Additionally, toluene has been used as a coolant in sodium cold traps for nuclear reactor system loops thanks to its ideal heat transfer capabilities.
