A synonym for toluene, toluol is is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is insoluble in water and generally used as a paint thinner for oil based paints. It is insoluble in water, and also an important component of numerous industrial and commercial chemical compound production processes due to its utility as a solvent and feedstock. Originally distilled from pine oil as early as the mid 19th century, toluol is produced industrially as a byproduct of gasoline refining generated by a catalytic reformer or ethylene cracker. Toluol can also be extracted as byproduct of coke processing from coal. The final distillation process is accomplished via the same methods and processes as BTX aromatics (benzene, toluene, and xylene isomers). Toluol is also a critical component of the explosive compound trinitrotoluene (TNT) via multiple nitrations. In the automotive industry, toluol is also used as a octane booster for use in turbocharged Formula 1 engines.
