Zinc Chloride USP is a sterile, nonpyrogenic solution used as an additive to intravenous mixtures. Both zinc and chloride are white crystalline compounds that are soluble in water. Zinc is an essential nutrient that works as a co-factor for over 70 enzymes such as RNA and DNA polymerase, carbonic anhydrase andalkaline phosphatase. It promotes healing, skin hydration, growth and the sense of smell and taste. Its presences helps deficiency syndromes such as Parakeratosis, anorexia, growth retardation, dysosmia, geophagia, hypogonadism, hepatosplenomegaly and hypogeusia. This solution is used as part of total parenteral nutrition (TPN), given to patients who should not get their nutrition through eating. TPN enters the body through a needle or catheter placed in a vein. The drip containing zinc and other nutrients takes approximately 10 to 12 hours to fully pass into a patient's body. This nutrient may also be administered on its own through sterile needle injection.
